I have previously only used POP, so I may be facing a hurdle of understanding here.

How do I migrate my old world to IMAP?

I have successfully set up, within Outlook 2010, an account for my preferred email domain on nethosted (myname@mydomain, not the default account of abbreviated-mydomain)

That created a new entry in Outlook with folders for Inbox and 'Search Folders'. It did not create an Outlook folder for Drafts, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Junk, Outboox, all of which I get for all my POP3 and MAPI email accounts. (why?)

In the POP3 world, I create loads of folders and sub-folders to filter and file my emails.
Friends
Friends/Fred
Friends/Joe

I understand that with IMAP, these folders, and the filtering needs to be done server-side, and will automagically appear within Outlook.

How?

From Horde, I can create a new folder called 'Friends', which appears at the same level as Inbox; I cannot create it *within* Inbox.

Problem is I can't find a way of getting Outlook to see anything except Inbox.

Do I need to solve THAT problem, or do I need to work out how to create my folder hierarchy within Inbox?

I have looked at the 'Root folder' setting, feeling that may ne the key, but nothing I put there makes any difference to the folder structure shown in Outlook - it is always Inbox (+ Search folders) only.

MTIA.

Mark,

The way folders appear is likely down to our mailserver. Try setting the IMAP root prefix to "INBOX" or "/" (without the quotes). If the Sent etc folders don't appear after this then you'll have to manually subscribe to these via Outlook.

To migrate from POP3 to IMAP simply move/copy/drag your emails from your POP3 inbox to your IMAP inbox in Oulook and they will be synced.

Thanks,

Andrew

Once again, many thanks. I was nudging in the right direction, but you have saved me a lot of trial and error.

It seems that Horde isn't a good place to set up a folder structure within Inbox (in fact I don't think you can), but Outlook manages that nicely. As does Windows Live Mail ( great app, why would anyone spend their money on Outlook when this is free!)

Thank you,

Mark
