Say, for example, we have example.org as our main domain. What are the benefits of also registering the equivalent .net / .com / .co.uk and so on?
Assume these other domains will just be redirected to example.org. _________________ http://theunusualsuspect.com/ |

You'd do this to protect your brand. If you are a success and you don't own the .com (for example) you'll find someone will quickly buy it up and then charge you the earth to get it from them when you want it going forwards. They may also use it to try and generate revenue by filling it with adverts that you wouldn't want to associate with your site/brand. If you own it, you don't have any worries like this.
Also I'd say that most people if they couldn't remember whether your site was .org, .co.uk etc would try .com first so it's important that you have that to aid people in finding your site.
