Not really appropriate for the Charlotte Rutherford site but an alternative method of showing multiple images:
http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/09/08/10/

This is in flash but the same could be done in HTML.

usability studies? wtf? God help them if they had to use something like Excel.

We're not asking our visitors to create a spreadsheet. We're asking them (with most sites) to view our content. They don't have to grace our websites with their presence, and they will quickly leave us for one of the many compeititors (or perhaps give us less attention than they otherwise would) if we make it even slighty difficult for them. We should also be taking into consideration those with disabilities who may not be able to use a mouse and those using different devices.

As I said the internet would be a boring place if nothing was ever different.

Although you have some feedback over one particular characteristic of your sites navigation that may be a problem, that doesn't mean the responders want it to be the same as everything else.

If I had this issue with a site and I wanted to keep horizontal navigation, I'd be looking into introducing 'previous' and 'next' links that make it easier for some people to identify direction of travel and to skip to the next shot. Perhaps jQuery.ScrollTo  could be used.

For example, Paolo Boccardi  implements clickable numbers along the bottom. Eolo Perfido  doesn't have any active navigation aids, but it does at least have a small graphic pointing out the direction of scroll for any who may not pick up on it. http://www.thehorizontalway.com/ showcases horizontally scrolling sites, and it provides left/right arrows and makes the scrollwheel work. Maybe there will be some more good examples at this site.

I recommend http://www.alistapart.com/, and apparently Don't Make Me Think  is very good.

different eh, not sure how well it would work with a selection of very different images.

thanks David, I'd seen the horizontalway site before. Your response has been most helpful as I can see you know what you're talking about.

I'll ask the client but they've not had any issues with anyone not knowing how to view the site.

As for getting people thinking, that's not a bad thing
too much is spoon fed in this world already lol

Scrolling in general is not hard work; I specifically meant repeated, stop-start horizontal scrolling....

For photography sites I find it easier to look at slideshows or thumbnail galleries.

I completely agree with you, scrolling is not hard work at all but sometimes if I work for long hours there's pressure on my arm and fingers especially.
I do a lil bit of photography work too and I find slide shows more organized and less time consuming as well.
