| |
Hi,
I tried to send an email to an nhs address the other day, and it just got returned to me with the error "the message that you sent has not yet been delivered to one or more of its recipients after more than 24 hours on the queue on sun.solardns.com".
| Code: | xxxxx@xxxxx.nhs.uk
Delay reason: SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<xxxxx@xxxxx.nhs.uk>:
host mail.nhs.uk [212.137.44.179]: 451 Requested mail action not taken:
mailbox unavailable |
I did a quick google to try to understand the issue, reading the replies I'm not sure if this is to do with their server or yours, or even my configuration, and I'm trying to pinpoint the problem. I am authenticating SMTP, and have no issues emailing anywhere else!
Many thanks for any information. |

Hi,
This is an error from the NHS's email servers. The person you are trying to email's mailbox isn't recognised/known by their mailserver.
Thanks,

Thanks so much Andrew. I just needed to confirm that the delay was their problem as the email I sent was urgent.
Cheers,
Matthew. |

I am sure Andrew will correct me if I'm wrong but Mailbox unavailable generally means that the mailbox doesn't exist rather than it just isn't working right at this moment.
The usual cause of this is that the sender (i.e. you) has got the email address wrong. I am sure you have checked this but as you said that it is important, it would be worth rechecking this again. |

I have definitely got the email address correct, whether I was told the wrong address and am just repeating a mistake is another matter!
Think it could it be because of an overloaded inbox? I expect the address is receiving a very large number of emails in the last 48 hours.
Thanks. |

This one is a hard one to answer as it all depends on how the mail server admins have setup their servers at the NHS I'm afraid. They might give this error if the mailbox is full/disabled/non-existent, it's just not possible to know I'm afraid.
Thanks,
