Thought I'd mention it here in case the topic is relevant to any current Net Hosted customers who wish to give their input if they've used Magento, or in case Net Hosted staff wish to introduce themselves/the service there. I've put in a good word already.

Hmm, I see someone is linking us via net-hosted.co.uk! Are the Magento community receptive to hosts joining?

Thanks,

Andrew

I'm not involved enough to say at the moment, Andrew. I expect if you joined with the intention of finding out what the software truly requires in order to improve your service rather than just announcing yourself in that thread, the community would be only too happy to tell you what they want.

Magento certainly has a lot going for it, so it's a shopping system you might want to give attention to.

Well we certainly host plenty of Magento installs! I will task Darryl with looking into this tomorrow.

Thanks for the tip!

Good to know.

I think it can be a little slow compared to some other "carts".

I didn't want to say it but I have to agree! It really does seem quite sluggish. We put a brand new install on a VPS and did what we could to try and optimise and speed it up but it still wasn't all that quick compared to it's competitors especially when you populate it. I know it's not our hosting as various Magento installs from other hosts exhibit the same lack of "snappiness".

Hopefully the Magento folks are working on this aspect too.

Andrew

Yeah. I'm planning to use it for a shop soon on Mars - hope it runs okay.

It's definitely still usable, it's not that slow... just not as quick as it's competitors

What will Magento become in 2009?

Quote:
New front end model for improved performance due soon (one client already testing this) - this would be great, the front end can be slow for large catalogues.

So the good news seems to be performance improvements and continued development of the API.

I am getting a bit tired of waiting 50 seconds to save a product in our (growing) database of products. We recently started running a dedicated DB server but this doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference.

This sounds like great news!

While I'm a big fan of Magento at the moment I think speed is definitely something that could be worked on, the feature set seems fairly comprehensive as it is.

Hopefully we'll see a more responsive Magento in 2009

Darryl

Frontend Flat Catalog and improved performance. From early test and benchmarks we see up to 40% performance improvement when comparing to Magento 1.2.x both in page loads and memory usage. We will publish formal results over the next few days.

Magento Version 1.3.0 is Now Available!

I'll do a test install sometime soon. Not sure how much difference it will make to small catalogues.

Sounds like some good progress there, look forward to seeing more performance improvements from Magento as they go on!

I've just come across Methods and Best Practices for High Performance eCommerce with the Magento Enterprise Edition  - thought it might be useful to you, NH. I assume the principles apply to the Community Edition as well.

David,

Thanks for that, we'll definitely have a look through it, see if there is anything further to optimise!

Regards,

Darryl
