I've just upgraded my 2 main workstations at the surgery from 256Kb RAM to one at 1Gb and the other 512Kb and the speed increase is great. Programs are working quicker and Norton doesn't slow everything to a crawl. I don't know why I didn't do it sooner and all for less than £60. Is there anything better in life than more RAM (except even more RAM)?

Are we talking about just computers here?

It depends on whether you want to keep it clean or not?

Sliced bread is pretty good although if you have a Morrisons near you, their bakery is excellent.

No Morrisons around these parts!

Back to your original question, well no really - RAM is easily the cheapest, best option computer upgrade wise

I've never put so much RAM in one PC before, the most I've had before was 512Kb in my laptop and I've been really impressed. Pound for pound, it must be better than a processor upgrade.

PS I see you haven't managed to change the time yet!!

You mean I have to change it myself!!

/*Walks off in a huff/*

I did have it set to GMT, I guess a unix box wont update for BST itself. All changed at this end now.

Yeah, all I can set is the time Guests see which makes sense not everyone viewing the board operates on BST

More Ram is a good thing any day of the week, Norton's however has got to be one of the biggest resource hogger's on a computer. I stopped using Norton's 3 years ago and after 6 months of trying this and that i settled on NOD32 by Eset. Got to be the best AV out there, but thats just my opinion Kaspersky is another goodun.

I've used Norton for years and only started to have a problem with 2004 & 2005. On my laptop it is almost too slow and resource hungry to be any use. I will probably consider alternatives when my subscriptions run out.

When I used Windows I used NOD32 exclusively it *is* (fact) the best AV out there, it scans so well and never let anything get by.

*cough* not to tell the boss hes wrong or anything but the independantly researched best is kaspersky

Kaspersky has consistantly achieved the most correct detections and removals for both obsucure and common viruses/trojans and other malware.

Its well worth investing in for both windows and unix platforms

Not true at all - independent tests show NOD is better it's never missed one virus in some tests that are carried out every month which I now can't find (ssshh). I know for a fact it was the only one that has this record.

Not to mention a friend who had Kaspersky + about 0.5TB of disks was looking at a scan time of over a day!! NOD32 = 30 minutes for that.

uhm well it will take a while to scan 500GB of data... I dont see how it can be done accurately in 30 minutes.

I'll have to dig out th elink I looked at ranking kaspersky in the top3 with nod32 coming in around 10-8
