| |
I've just had a question from one of my colleagues...
If we buy a keyword rich domain name (assuming we can get one with the keywords/phrase we want) and link to our websites from it, will we get more traffic?
Example: If we had removalsleicestershire.com and had links to two of our websites with a bit of info that says something like "these are a couple of websites that provide removals in leicestershire".
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
Thanks.

Hi,
I've researched this myself, and a recent post by Matt Cutts (a Google employee that deals with SEO and the SEO community) explained precisely this, you can take a look here: http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-on-keywords-in-the-url-16976
His views tend to be quite conservative as Google don't appreciate people manipulating their rankings, in my opinion keywords in the URL do give some benefits search engine wise so if you could get them then I would.
There are a few specifics about your situation that I would comment on though, buying these domains then linking from them to your main domain would not in itself raise the traffic to the main domain. You would need to get the domain you purchased ranking in Google for the keywords you wanted via onpage optimisation and offpage link building, once this is ranked for the terms that you want then this should hopefully start receiving traffic which you could funnel through to your main site.
I hope that's useful, if you have any more questions feel free to ask, I'm fairly familiar with most SEO topics
Regards,

Regards,
Darryl | Sorry to hijack the thread - but I have a question regarding SEO subject - so thought it might fit in here anyway...
I have recently installed a zen cart in a sub folder of my main domain - and was wondering if I should - or could be better setting it up as a sub domain - or redirecting - or whatever - is there a best way to go about this ?
And if I do need to change things - how would I go about moving the site from folder to sub domain, or redirecting ? |

Hi,
Subfolders are actually preferred to subdomains for SEO, subdomains are treated as a separate site to the main site, so unless there is a good reason for using a subdomain such as wanting more defined separation to your site then I would recommend a subfolder.

Regards,
Darryl | Thanks for that - this particular zen cart I have installed is a totally unrelated business - so I guess that having it as a subdomain would be a better idea - as I do want a separation ?
I also have a zen cart on the main domain - but again totally unrelated content - I have started to use the zen cart script quite a bit - as there is a lot of in-built function - rather than building a site from scratch - and quite possible to adjust the style and look fairly easily - and lots of add ons available too...
I wonder if I created a subdomain for the site (folder) in question - could I then redirect - to save me having to move the content and reconfigure the database etc ? |
