PostPosted: Mon Apr 19, 2010 5:57 pm    Post subject: Transfer from Fasthosts

I have posted before but things have moved on since. I have my website and email hosted by FH who are also domain registrars for my .co.uk and .com domains.

Currently I use Zoneedit to provide nameservers as I needed to be able to manipulate cname records to provide a subdomain for a blogger hosted blog.

I intend to transfer shortly and would still liketo retain the flexibility of zoneedit.

Can I retain the use of zoneedit?
What happens if I decide to ditch FH as registrars and move domains to NH (or should I renew and do at my leisure).
Are there any issues parking the .com domain on top of the .co.uk as is presently done?

Are there any other issues to be wary of?

Hi,

I don't have personal experience of Zoneedit but from the looks of it they are just allowing you to create your DNS zone on their nameservers and then I assume you are pointing the domain to the Zoneedit nameservers at your registrar. If this is the case then you can continue to do this.

Moving the domain to us shouldn't make a difference to the functionality, you'll be able to use our control panel to set the nameservers of your domain instead of FH and contact us for any necessary changes to the domain.

There are no problems with parking the domain as mentioned.

The only thing I would suggest is to make sure your site and email accounts are fully set up on our service before updating the nameserver records at Zoneedit so that your site continues to function seamlessly with no downtime.

Regards,

Darryl

Brilliant, presumably if I allow a small overlap period I can set up mysite and email on NH and then simply make the changes on zoneedit. That way the propogation delay is entirely in my own hands.

If I want to use NH as my registrar do I 'do the moving stuff' with tags etc and then change the nameservers on my NH account to point to zoneedit?

This looks simpler than I thought!!

Hi,

That is correct, the overlap would definitely be recommended, typically DNS propagation is complete within around 6 hours in my experience but it does depend on your TTL's.

You will need to order a transfer via your Client Area, then update the tags for .uk domains. The nameservers will be left as they are when the transfer occurs so you shouldn't actually need to change these.

Regards,

Darryl

Not sure I understand about the nameservers. If FH are the registrar then it is their system that will point to zoneedit. If I transfer teh domains to NH then will I not have to set this up on NH or does the nameserver info actually move with the domain?

Hi,

The nameservers as they stand are transferred to the new registrar, so the domain will enter our care with the Zoneedit nameservers still defined.

Regards,

Darryl

After a short delay I am about to start this process off. Initially I will procedd as above i.e. purchasing hosting and retain zonedit for DNS and leave fasthosts as registrars for .co.uk and .com domains (I am too close to renewal to move just now).

In order to upload my website I will need a temporary address, I assume that some sort of address for ftp and viewing the site will be available?

At what point will I be able to determine the MX and A records that need to be set up with zoneedit?

Finally I have my .com domain set up with web and email forwarding. What are my options here? I can a) leave it as is b) can I do something with zoneedit? c) can I do something with nethosted after I have transferred the domains?

Hi,

You are correct, we provide a temporary address to view your site and make any changes before it is live.

The A record for your domain will point to 213.229.78.29 if you are signing up for a new account with us in the near future. Typically the rest of the DNS is setup with a mail CNAME pointing to the domain name and then the MX record pointing to mail.domainname.tld.

You can setup the web and email forwarding through us if you wish, you will be able to add the domain to your account as a parked domain, from here you can set it to either mirror or forward to a site, and you can also setup the email either with its own account(s) or individual email redirects or a blanket catch-all redirect.

Regards,

Darryl

Just found out that I have a few days grace to perform domain transfers. I need 30 days and .com due Aug 1st so if I start today with both .com and .co.uk I can make it. Presumably this would make things easier for me regarding parked domain etc?

I assume that the way to start of is 1) buy a hosting package 2) organise domain transfers 3) upload site and tweak domains after transfer complete 4) make DNS changes to zoneedit to complete the process.

Will I get a list of addresses to set up via A records e.g ftp.domain.co.uk, mail.co.uk etc?

Hi,

Yes this would be the recommended order for proceeding, I can give you a list of subdomains that are setup by default which are:

www.
mail.
ftp.
cpanel.
webmail.
webdisk.

These should all point to the earlier IP I gave you.

Regards,

Darryl

I understand that these will need to be set up but initially I do not want them set up as I will be using my existing hosting provider until the point that I wish to swap over. I will then do this by swapping DNS records in my zoneedit account which will presumably all point to the IP address that you mentioned.

Initially all I need is a raw account to be able to upload my site and to effect the domain transfers.

Yes that's fine, I understand that too I was just letting you know as you asked

When you are ready to make your site live on our service you'll just setup the above records in the DNS zone for your domains.

Regards,

Darryl

Just one question, how can I buy hosting without specifying a domain name? The first option screen will not let me do this. Or can I specify a domain but not associate it with the new hosting package?

When signing up you should choose the 3rd option:

I will update the nameservers on an existing domain or I will register a new domain separately

And just enter the domain that you are going to use in future when your site goes live.

Welcome aboard!

Regards,

Darryl
