| |
Hi,
I have an image in 2 formats (.gif and .png)
The .gif is 4.56 KB
The .png is 8.29 KB
What is the best format to use for the website? _________________ Regards,

Assuming the image quality is identical (or close enough) then always use the lowest sized image.

You could of also gone for png if you wanted it for use with transparency, if someone was to link to it on their website for example (with your permission preferably) whereby they were to then use it in a transparent (see-through) way.

The main difference between pngs will do full colour (24 bit) images where as gifs will only do 256 different colours (8 bit). pngs are also generally smaller than gifs (unless the image size is small) so are generally the better format to use.
The smaller gif size in your image is likely to be either down to loss of image data (24 bits to 8 bits conversion) or to the loss of image header data (who made the file etc). If you converted the gif back into a png then I would suspect that the new png would be smaller than the original.
Both pngs and gifs do transparancy. |

transparent gif's should work in IE6
transparent png files are not supported with older versions of IE, I'm not sure which though. It still displays the image, but usually gives it a grey background. |

| Incorrect display of images in IE6 - what ever the format - should be left as punishment for the user for using IE6..... |
