Hello,

I would like to migrate my 8.3.6 PostgreSQL database here. You have 8.3.4 according to http://www.nethosted.co.uk/uk-web-hosting.php maybe it won't be problem, but if you have short term to upgrade version of your database server.

Thanks.

Jano

Jano,

Currently we do not have any schedule for upgrading PostgreSQL. I suspect your database will work fine on 8.3.4.

Thanks,

Andrew

Actually I see 8.3.7 through phpPgAdmin, great.

But I have problem with db creation:

ERROR: permission denied to create database

Vo výraze:
CREATE DATABASE "xyz" WITH ENCODING='UTF8'

I would like to import 6 MB SQL dump, how can I do it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

You should use cPanel to create the PostgreSQL database you require. You can then use phpPgAdmin to import your data.

Thanks,

Andrew

Great to hear!

For Remote postgreSQL access we need to add your IP to a whitelist, I can see your current IP, is this a fixed IP address?

Regards,

Darryl

I afraid, that it is not fixed. I would like also to have allowed several other IP addresses (at least one of them fixed).

If variable IP addresses are security issue for you, do you have some VPN or SSH tunnel possibility?

Hi,

VPN or SSH are not an option, we can add IP address ranges so if you can tell us the ranges that the IP address access will be from we can add these.

Regards,

Darryl

I am designing a commercial app which would access a remote PostgreSQL database, perhaps hosted by your good selves. However, from the above it sounds like this could be a problem, in that my customers' IP addresses would all need to go on your whitelist. If they don't have fixed IP addresses, how can we get round this? Also they might potentially want to access their DB on the move.

I'd appreciate your advice on this issue. Many thanks.

Hi,

We can allow for whole classes of IP addresses to be given access. I'm afraid there is no better way to do this. From a sane security point of view the model should be based around granting access to addresses not blocking "bad" addresses.

Thanks,

Andrew

Thankyou for your prompt and frank reply.

I was thinking along the lines of username/password security (albeit done by the app and transparent to the user except at install time). Failing that, I guess by ranges you mean that a single range might cover all users at a given site; but each site would still need its own range? In that case, what's the procedure for adding a range to your whitelist and what kind of turnaround time could I expect?

I have lots more questions but we're getting a bit off-topic.... I'll start a new thread.

Hi,

For remote access we do require username & password authentication but also IP validation too.

We apply IP auth on a per database basis. Turn around is prompt.

Hope that helps,

Andrew
