I still cannot change permissions in several of my files and folders created or uploaded within Mambo. I have resigned myself to having to work around the problem for a while in the hope that you can provide a soution for all us Mambo users in due course.

I am currently unable to chown these files owned by nobody. What is the best way for me to do this please - how do I log in as root?

As Mark said, it's not possible for you as a user to chown files not owned by you. You can't log in as route only staff can.

I am sure you would have these same problems on 99% of other hosts as they would be running PHP in the exact same way we do.
