Did a default activate which created v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:213.129.84.44 ~all
...but with this (redacted) warning:
WARNING: The system cannot verify that this server is an authoritative nameserver for “w********5.com”.

That's perfectly true as the domain is actually hosted with joker.com with MX records pointing to mx1. and mx2.solardns.com. The authoritative nameservers are a. b. and c.ns.joker.com.

I'm a bit puzzled why it would expect my mailserver to also be an authoritative nameserver - isn't that 2 distinct roles?

How can I configure correctly?

Also a bit puzzled by the ~all. Doesn't that mean just accept any mail sender? Wouldn't a better default be -all?

MTIA

Mark

Hi Mark,

This warning is simply due to the domain not using our nameservers, meaning that the SPF record that was created won't be active as it will never actually be seen. You'll need to add this record with the domain's nameserver provider - not with us.

The ~all means soft fail, you can use -all for strict fail if you prefer.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Brad

After a bit of experimentation it seems that I need to create a TXT record at joker, not an SPF record.

If I create an SPF record and then send a mail the header says spf not active but if I create a TXT record it says spf=pass.

v=spf1 +mx -all

...was all that I needed.

Excellent! All it needs is the other 99.99% of the world to start using spf and we might get somewhere.

DKIM seems a bit harder as it's the mailserver (you) that adds the key, but as you're not also the authoritative nameserver that seems to be a show-stopper (so I got the same warning message when I activated DKIM).

Can't add a DKIM record at joker (no such thing) and I can't see that would help as the email is coming from nethosted.

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Not a problem!

Regarding DKIM, please submit a ticket so we can provide you with the TXT record to set this up with Joker.

Kind regards,
Brad

Done; thanks again. A real pleasure to deal with tech support who are sharp and expert. Happens so rarely these days.
