Hi,

We're happy to announce from today that PHP 5.3.13 is now available for testing on all of our shared hosting servers (excluding Mercury which already runs PHP 5.3), alongside our current PHP 5.2 implementation. One of the main reasons for this introduction is the fact that PHP 5.2 has reached it's end of life so is no longer patched by developers. PHP 5.3 also introduces new features that developers of your applications and scripts may utilise, a document on migrating from PHP 5.2 to 5.3 that gives some guidelines is available here: . This document contains details of changes in PHP 5.3 which may affect applications developed specifically for PHP 5.2 or that contain outdated code, we recommend that you test your applications with PHP 5.3 during this transition period by following the instructions below.

If you are using PHP scripts encoded with Zend these will need to be updated for PHP 5.3 or replaced with IonCube versions as Zend is not compatible across these PHP versions.

Enable PHP 5.3:

To enable your account to use PHP 5.3 for testing you should upload a file named "togglephp53.txt" into the public_html folder via FTP. Within a minute you will see a new file called "PHP_53_ENABLED" to let you now that PHP 5.3 has been successfully enabled on the account.

Disable PHP 5.3:

You can disable PHP 5.3 once you've finished testing by uploading the file called "togglephp53.txt" again to your public_html folder via FTP. A file called "PHP_53_DISABLED" will be added to your public_html folder to let you now when PHP 5.3 has been disabled on the account.

The method to allow PHP 5.3 to run side by side PHP 5.2 is a temporary measure which is not as efficient as a full PHP 5.3 implementation, this is currently scheduled to replace PHP 5.2 as the main PHP version on 31/07/12 though this is subject to change based on testing, this thread will be kept updated if there are any changes to this plan.

We are already looking into PHP 5.4 and plan to migrate to this once this is technically feasible.

These changes have been made so that we can continue to provide the high quality service that we pride ourselves on and we hope that you enjoy the benefits that this upgrade brings to your hosting experience.

Regards,
Bret
