Does anyone have any suggestions how to store personal contact information (ie address, email, phone number) in some sort of easy to access database on my webspace? This is for friends contact details and just personal use for me and my wife.

Obviously it would need to be password protected.

Ideally it would be possible to sync with mobile phones.

I assume it can be done with the full blown Outlook Webaccess thing but I assume this costs a small fortune and needs MS exchange etc.

Is there a Fantastico package that would allow this? (in a relatively simple manner).

I see that Fantastico offers database packages (SQL etc) but I assume these are more based around website management rather than what I'm after. (I've not used these yet so haven't a clue on this)

Any advice welcome!

And what would people recommend for backing up photos offline (I had my last computer nicked and lost all my photos). I see some of the Fantastico packages offer this such as Coppermine... Any recommendation? I guess I may use up my webspace fairly quickly if I do this...

Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

Actually our webmail offerings would allow you to have password protected access to an address book type system. You should have a poke around in your webmail client of choice and see if any of them suit your needs.

Are these full size photos that you're looking to keep full size (e.g. 100MB each?) if so the best solution would be an external hard drive to be honest. Programs like Coppermine or Gallery would first compress your photos I imagine, this doesn't lend itself to well to being a place to back them up.

Thanks,

Andrew

Yikes, 100MB each - Andrew what sort of camera do you have? :P

I presume you accidentily added a zero there, since the average digital camera today will produce raw images no greater than 16MB, probably averaging about 10-12MB.

But yes, even with smaller files, backing up online is not the best solution - an external harddrive is definitely what Max wants - lots of space available in a compact and lightweight package.

Max: Investigate the Western Digital Passport (and similar devices) - £60 for 250GB - easily enough for over twenty thousand top quality images.
